It was great, but unfortunately not perfect. We had tons of best times and huge drops and new State cuts, but not everything went the way I had hoped. As a team, we placed 2nd and only 45 points behind Glendale, our depth really came through. Before things got going, Shelby sang a beautiful National Anthem on Friday, gave me goose bumps and got the girls really fired up. Saturday we were treated to Kickapoo student Faith Morgan singing. The meet started off with a new school record in the 200 medley relay and 1 of our 3 SWMO titles. Congrats to Kelsey, Megan Pool, Bobbles and Maddie on winning and breaking a 3 year old record . The 200 frees were great as well. Best times from Boo, Gabby, Courtney, Rebekah and Ashlyn. Megan Pool finished 3rd in the 200 IM. Maddie Marshall made her 50 State cut on Friday. Shelby, Emily, MK, Jette, Hayleigh all had great swims. Britt, Heidi & Maddie all placed top 18. Olivia won diving, followed by Shalom (2nd), Kylie (4th) and Peli (8th). The divers were our biggest scoring event of the meet. 100 fly was good. Rebekah, Ashlyn, MG and Rachel all had best times. Rachel placed 3rd overall. The 100 free was solid also. Katie Mack almost broke the 1:00 barrier. Kelsey, Maddie & Katie Mack placed 7th, 8th & 10th respectively. Boo was 6th in the 500, followed by Courtney and Gabby in 10th & 11th. Mackenzie was 13th. All 4 girls posted season best times.

The 200 free relay was 7th overall. Kelsey won the 100 back. Heidi & Britt were 9th & 10th. In the 100 breast, we had 3 girls in the finals and placed 3rd, 5th and 6th overall (Pool, Bobbles and Miller). Katie Mack was 14th. Our 400 free relay placed 2nd overall, but more importantly we made our State cut. Kelsey also led off with a 100 free State cut.

We also were able to qualify our 200 free relay for State in the Last Chance Meet on Saturday.

I was pleased with how the girls performed and how they supported each other throughout the meet. I wish we would have made a few more State cuts and best times. State is up next and we go in with an opportunity to finish the season with some great performances.

The following girls will be going to State and representing Kickapoo
Olivia Willoughby - diving
Megan Pool - 200 IM & 100 breast
Kelsey Messner - 100 free & 100 back
Maddie Marshall - 50 free
Boo Koss - 500 free

Rachel Scott, Courtney Horn, Katie McCormick, Megan Miller, Brittney Behnen, Mackenzie Laney, Gabby Garrison, Heidi Schmitz are all going for relays.

Well, we won the diving and the last relay, but the meet wasn’t very close this year. We knew this going in, so we decided to keep our focus on other things other than the final score. The word for the night was opportunity. I challenged the girls to take advantage of every opportunity they had in the meet - personally and as a team. I think overall we did that. In the relays, we went best times in all 3 relays and I feel like there is a lot of hope in making the State cuts in the 200 free & 400 free relays. We are less than 2 seconds from the 200 free relay and 3 seconds from the 400 free relay. We are also within a second of breaking our school record in the 200 medley relay with our combined best splits. Individually there were some great performances too. On the boards, Shalom had her best overall performance of the year and looked outstanding. Kylie, Peli and Rae are also making some great improvements. Ashlyn had 2 best times on the night - 200 IM & 100 Fly. Boo broke 1:00 in the 100 free for the first time. Hayleigh, Emily, MK, MC, Jette and Shelby all had at least 1 best relay split or individual best time. Overall, we were very happy with how the girls did - things continue to move in the right direction.

KC Re-Cap

It was a kinda sorta bumped and bruised group, but we made our way to KC and made a good showing. We placed 8th overall out of 17 teams. Olivia placed 7th on the board, and Kylie and Shalom both made good showings. Our medley relay did well and placed 4th. In the 200 IM, Megan Pool made a qualifying time and placed 3rd overall. Megan Miller had a best time and was 16th overall. Maddie has a season best with a 26.40 in the 50 and placed 8th. Bobbles followed with a 10th place finish in the fly. Maddie broke a minute in the 100 free and placed 10th. The 500 free’s were some of our best swims of the weekend. Gabby went from a 6:20 to a 6:04 and placed 21st. Courtney broke the 6 minute barrier and placed 14th. The 200 free relay was 11th with a solid time. Courtney was 23rd in the back (she was so excited). Megan Pool placed 6th in the breast and improved on her State qualifying time. Megan Miller was 16th and is now within .6 of a second from qualifying for State. Bobbles also went a best and finished 19th. Our 400 Free was 12th to finish the meet.

The girls did a good job at the meet. We had more best times than I thought we would. We still have a ways to go, but I think we are still on track for a great February. I think the big thing now is figuring out the best place to put all of our girls so we can maximize our points in our championship meets.

Swimmin’ Women Re-Cap

We went up against some of the best competition in the state and did a pretty good job. Glendale, Rockbridge, Hickman & Blue Springs will make up 4 of the top 6 - 10 teams in the state this year. They are all filled with powerhouse girls. I thought our girls did a great job racing and looked good in the water. It was our first time racing in about 3 weeks, so I think there was a little rust. Our 200 Medley went a best time which was a great way to get things started. We had best times on the day by Maddie, Boo, Courtney, Megan Miller, Bobbles, Megan Pool, Gabby, Mack, Katie Mack, K-Mezz and Britt.

Ozarks Invite Re-Cap

A good start to the 2nd half of the season. All of the girls had the opportunity to swim at the Ozarks Invite this year, a first ever. We had some great performances and overall the girls had a great time together, even though the meet lasted almost 5 hours. I think the biggest thing we need to do in the last month of the season is get some more speed. There are a few other little things to clean up, but the girls are coming around well and I think our winter break practices are going to pay off in a big way in February.

Central, Joplin, Seymour Re - Cap

We got our first wins of the 2nd half of the season against Central, Joplin & Seymour. It was a little bit of a relaxed meet and several girls swam off events. We had lots of best times across the board, won all 3 relays and 2 individual events (100 back - Mackenzie and diving - Olivia). We had several best times for the girls - Kelsey, K-Mack, Megan Imhof, Ashlyn, Tasha, Rebekah, Courtney, Gabby, Hayleigh, MK, Mary Grace, Mack, Britt, Megan Pool, Megan Miller & Emily. Shalom had her best diving performance of the season. Peli and Courtney Stuvick now have 6 dives and have competed.

The weekend in St. Louis was pretty solid overall. The girls had a good time together (I think). They sabotaged my hotel room with mayo. They sported some stylish Christmas sweaters. They got in some good training. They proved they could swim fast even while training very hard. We got our Medley Relay qualified for State. Boo made her 500 Free cut for State also.

We swam 90 minutes in the morning before leaving for St. Louis, then another almost 2 hours before competing at MICDS. We still had several swims that were season bests or lifetime bests. We were also able to win all 3 relays, the 200 IM (Boo), the 50 Free (Maddie), the 100 Fly (Bobbles), and the 100 Back (K-Mezz). We didn’t score out the meet, but we performed very well.

The goal on Saturday was to see some different competition and simulate a Friday / Saturday swim meet. The girls did well. We started the meet off right with a State qualifying time in the 200 Medley Relay. K-Mezz, Megan Pool, Bobbles and Maddie put together all 4 legs at once to make the time. They dropped over 4 seconds off our previous season best. The 200 frees were pretty good. Heidi, Courtney & Britt all went season best times. In the IM, Megan Miller & Ashlyn had bests. Katie Mack & Gabby both went bests in the 50. The divers did well in the morning. Olivia was 4th and Kylie was 11th. This was the first 11 dive meet for the girls. In the fly, Katie Mack & Megan Imhoff had best times. K-Mezz, Maddie, Heidi & Tasha all had solid times in the 100 free. Courtney dropped another 5 seconds in the 500. Our 200 free relays were pretty good. We are going to have to work on our sprint free if we are going to qualify that relay for State. Gabby, Britt & Mack all had good backstrokes. In the breast, Megan Miller & Tasha had season bests. The 400 free relays were ok. I was hoping for a little faster times, but solid. It is tough to be able to swim 8 times in less than 24 hours, but the girls did a good job. In the end, they will have to be able to come up big when they are tired, so we still need to work on that.

It is time for us to shift a little bit of our training and do a little more quality work and sprint work. We will have a good winter break, continue to train hard and work towards our goal of fast swimming in February.

The girls performed well at Webb City and came away with wins over Webb, Joplin & Nevada. We were only able to win 2 individual races (Olivia - diving & Maddie - 50 free) and 2 relays (Medley & 400 Free), but our depth was too much for the other teams. This was also a good meet because very girl on the team had the opportunity to pick their events and swim individual races. Early in the year, the most important thing is to figure out where to put everyone and what everyone’s strength is. I think there were several pleasant surprises at the meet. I comtinue to be impressed with our new girls on the team. Megan Pool has already made 1 State cut and adds some more power to our breast & IM events. Boo in her 500 is only 7 - 8 seconds away from making State. Courtney Horn & Katie McCormick will add good depth in their events as well. We have several freshman that will battle with our older girls for the traveling team and top 3 - 4 in events. It is exciting to see how much our team will grow from our new additions. I like the competition within the team as well. The girls seem to push each other, but keep in mind that they are all on the same team.

The bus ride to & from was fun as well. Before we loaded the bus, our team photographer, Kerry Scott, took some great pics of the girls. I am sure it will get posted soon. The girls are making some good memories and growing closer together each day. This is a fun group to coach.

Off to St. Louis this weekend for a couple of meets with a chance to see what St. Louis has to offer.

The girls handled Ozark 128 - 57 on Friday night for their first win of the year. Kickapoo won every event on the night and every girl had the opportunity to race. Olivia Willoughby qualified for State in diving by scoring 211.15 and winning the event. The other State qualifier for Kickapoo was Freshman Megan Pool. Pool made the 100 Breaststroke cut by almost a full second. Event winners for the Lady Chiefs were Rachel Scott, Maddie Marshall, Kelsey Messner, Megan Miller, Boo Koss & Courtney Horn.

We once again saw a lot of good things out of the girls, but plenty to work on. We will continue to train hard and get stronger through the end of the year.

Up next is Webb City on Tuesday. Every girl will get to swim individual events at this meet.
